Yuping Yang, Postdoctoral Research Associate in Data Science
Yuping works on the NF1 Brain Chart Project, funded by a £2.2 million award from the US Department of Defence, as part of a global collaborative team based across the UK, the US, Europe, and Australia. Drawing on more than 10,000 MRI scans, Yuping investigates the developmental trajectory of brain morphology in children and adolescents with NF1, identifying alterations at each stage relative to normative models. She also examines how variant genotypes influence the brain charts in NF1 and how these alterations contribute to cognitive dysfunction.
Yuping graduated with Distinction in MEng Computer Science & Technology (2022) before completing her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience (2025) at the University of Manchester. During her PhD, she studied brain controllability in normative cohorts and MS, focusing on how key regions, such as the thalamus, drive brain dynamics underpinning cognitive state transitions. She also held an honorary PhD researcher position at University College London, where she worked with the MindGlide Team on developing transfer learning models using PyTorch and MONAI DynUnet for brain imaging segmentation across 23,000 MRI scans. In addition, Yuping chaired the Doctoral Academy Graduate Society of the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at the University of Manchester and worked as an International Student Ambassador and Graduate Teaching Assistant.
